Geneva, one of my black sex link hens, is going to demonstrate how to lay an egg.
That's Geneva on the right, with Ophelia wearing orange.
First you have to jump up into the coop to see if there's a nest box that's unoccupied.
Once in the nest, you have to get comfortable, cluck and squeal a bit, then assume the position.
When ready to go, stand up to allow egg to fall to the nest floor. You can still see the bloom on the egg Geneva just produced on the right. She was laying the egg when I snapped the photo.
Finally, bend over and poke your head between your legs so you can see the great feat you've just accomplished!

absolutely amazing. Ophelia, my dear, you have something to crow about. I didn't know that they stood to let it drop. I thought it just sort of waffled out underneath. Still chortling over 'tuck head between legs to admire what you have done!'
Quite a feat for you to be able to catch the sequence of events. Excellent! Love the photos.
You are fast Marie Anne...! Now I know how to lay an egg! lol
Oh BTW...my nephew was at a wedding recently and Michael Weatherly was there and pics were taken with him. He said he was a real gentleman.
Okay, this post is entirely too cute. ºÜº [Great nest boxes -- good job]
I agree with Callie! This is a wonderful sequence of photos :)
How cute! I can't believe she let you stand there and take picture. I guess when it's time, it's time. Sometimes mine will take hours to lay an egg.
Great sequence :)
Looks like your chickens keep you busy :) Wish I could keep some. Unfortunately we can't because we rent our house, but maybe one day.
